So, what is all the fuss about collagen?
Well, let us get into the basics of the dermis layer of our skin. It is made up of three crucial components:
🧡Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) such as Hyaluronic Acid.
Together, these form the bulk of our skins vital support system- the Extracellular Matrix (ECM) and gives our skin its structure and strength.
But as we age these components break down and result in reduced skin tone, fine lines, and wrinkles. Our skin cannot produce enough collagen and elastin to replenish what has been lost, so the skin begins to lose its strength, elasticity, and bounce over time.
As a result, the skin gets drier and fine lines and wrinkles start to appear. Throw in a cocktail of sun exposure, pollution, incorrect skincare and smoking and our ECM becomes even more vulnerable
And as collagen is the main component of our skin (about 70–80% of its dry weight this is what we want to protect and repair.
And here’s another reason to protect our collagen…
From our early twenties, the collagen content of the skin is known to decline by approximately 1% per year.
And collagen synthesis drops by 30% in the first four years of menopause, then by 2% annually.
How do we protect this precious aspect of our skin?
- Do not smoke…
- Avoid unprotected sun exposure – wearing a Broad-Spectrum SPF 30+ or greater every day. Excessive sun exposure also accelerates the skin ageing process. This is because ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes damage to DNA and molecules
- Consider non-invasive treatments such as Dermal Needling, Intense Pulsed Light, and Skin Peels to build collagen and improve the skin’s appearance.
- Use active ingredients, such as Vitamin A and C, that encourage collagen repair and production.
Our skin is precious and while we cannot stop ageing, we can start loving our skin that helps keep us looking younger for longer and sooner…
